The Wagon Wheel routes give you access to a less well known part
of Montagus district and are suitable for both 4x2 and 4x4 vehicles, although some
of the sectors are extremely difficult and can only be traversed by 4x4s, preferably
fitted with diff-locks as well.
Die Drive Out magazine
rates the 4x4 section as,
trail options ranging from challenging to
hair-raising, plus one where recovery back-up is crucial.
The Wagon Wheel
routes traverse over three adjacent farms in the north-western region of Montagus
district. It offers a circular route for 4x2s, linked at various places with more
difficult escape routes or detours for 4x4s only.
The Rubicon Canyon,
only accessible for short-wheel based 4x4s was added to the Wagon Wheel menu lately.
There is a lot of wild
life on the farm and you can expect to see grysbok, springbok, duiker, grey rhebok,
klipspringers, dassies, caracal, jackal and baboon in this area. If you are lucky you may
spot the black eagles and jackal buzzards as well.
The 4x2 section of the
route runs mainly through Karoo veld and patches of valley bush. The 4x4 section runs
through growths of protea an erica on the mountain slopes. Both sections take you to
look-out points from where you can get views over the surrounding mountainous landscape.
