Groot
Toren’s route is relatively easy and suitable for both 4x2’s and 4x4’s. The
first section to the mountain plateau is fairly steep. You must deflate your
vehicle’s tyres to at least 1,5 bar and 4x2’s must add about 200 kg of extra
weight above the rear axle to prevent unnecessary wheel spin, causing damage to the road
surface. Although there are a few special detours where only 4x4’s with low range
will be able to go, a 4x2 will easily complete the entire circle route. This is an excellent route for beginner 4x4
drivers and those with the super luxury off-road vehicles as there are no dongas,
"middelmannetjies" or rough rocky surfaces where the vehicles can be damaged.
Even the reeds en shrubs along the side of the trail are cut away in such a way that your
vehicle will hardly get any scratches if you drive carefully. Normal driving time, with
numerous stops included, is about four hours.
The rich variety of fynbos plants at
Groot Toren is this route’s best selling point. The panoramic views over the
Robertson Karoo landscape is a bonus. On a clear day you can even see the Bredasdorp
coastline from one of the viewpoints. An A-frame mountain hut, situated next to the trail
at one of the higher spots, will most probably encourage you to come back to this very
special mountain kingdom, sharing it with someone special.
This route, together with Zevenfontein, in the southern part of the
Robertson district offer visitors access to some of the Western Cape’s best preserved
areas of renosterbos and fynbos veld. You dare not miss an opportunity to visit this area. |

There
are six backpacker-type rooms, each one with a double bed, as well as camping sites at the
start of the route. Basic kitchen facilities, "donkie" heated showers and flush
toilets are available.
There is also an A-frame mountain hut, which can accommodate four guests, in the mountain.
It can only be reached by off-road vehicles.

Toren bied ‘n redelik maklike roete en is vir beide 4x2’s en 4x4’s geskik.
Die eerste deel tot op die berg is wel redelik steil en vra heelwat ekstra gewig en lae
banddruk by 4x2’s om te verhoed dat hulle die padoppervlakte onnodig uitskop. Daar is
ook ‘n paar spesiale 4x4 dele waar net rygoed met lae ratreekse dit sal maak, maar
4x2’s kan die hele groot bergsirkel met gemak voltooi. Dit is eintlik ‘n ideale veldryroete vir beginner 4x4 ryers
en vir dié met die heel luukse rygoed omdat daar feitlik geen middelmannetjies, los
rotsdele en diep slote is nie en die bosse so weggesny is dat as jy mooi ry, jou ryding
nooit sal krap nie. Normale rytyd oor die volle roete, vele stoppe ingesluit, is sowat 4
uur.
Die veld is ‘n paradys vir
plantliefhebbers en die uitsigte oor die Robertson Karoo en Breëriviervallei is
asemrowend. Op ‘n mooi dag kan jy selfs Bredasdorp se kus van daar bo af sien. Die
A-raam berghuis hoog bo in die berg is ‘n idilliese plek om oor te bly.
Hierdie roete, asook Zevenfontein, in die suidelike deel van
Robertson se distrik gee jou toegang tot van die Wes Kaap se bes bewaarde renosterveld en
fynbosgebiede. Moet dit dus nie verby ry nie. |

Daar
is ses sakpas tipe kamers met ‘n dubbelbed in elk, asook kampeerplekke aan die begin
van die roete. Daar is basiese kombuisfasiliteite, asook warm "donkie" verwarmde
storte en spoeltoilette.
Daar is ook ‘n A-raam tipe berghut, waar vier gaste kan slaap, in die berg. Dit kan
slegs per veldvoertuig bereik word.
